๐ Place Value & Face Value – What's the Difference?
Ever wondered why the digit 4 can be worth 4, 40, or 400? It's all about where it lives! Let's become place‑value detectives and crack the code of numbers up to thousands.
๐ In this post:
1. ๐ What is Face Value?
Face value is simply the digit itself – its own identity. No matter where it sits, the face value never changes. Just like you have the same name at home, at school, or in the park!
- In 6, 3 2, the face value of 6 is 6, of 3 is 3, of 2 is 2.
- In 4 0 5, the face value of 0 is 0.
Face value of 7 = 7 (the digit itself).
Face value of 4 = 4.
- Digit 3 in 3,287
- Digit 0 in 5,604
- Digit 9 in 9,999
2. ๐ What is Place Value?
Place value is the value a digit gets from its position in a number. A digit in the Ones house is just itself, but in the Tens house it becomes 10 times bigger!
- Ones place → digit × 1
- Tens place → digit × 10
- Hundreds place → digit × 100
- Thousands place → digit × 1000
Let's see it with blocks: ๐งฑ = 100, ๐ = 10, ● = 1.
Total = 300 + 40 + 2 = 342.
In 562, the digit 5 is in the Hundreds place → place value = 5 × 100 = 500.
3,780 → digits: 3(Th), 7(H), 8(T), 0(O).
7 is in Hundreds place → place value = 700.
- Digit 4 in 4 3 2
- Digit 2 in 1, 2 3 4
- Digit 0 in 5 0 6
3. ๐ Place Value Chart (H T O / Th H T O)
A place value chart helps us see exactly where each digit lives. Let's put the number 4, 8 3 6 into the chart.
So, 4,836 = 4 thousands + 8 hundreds + 3 tens + 6 ones.
2 is in the Hundreds place → place value = 200.
- 3, 0 9 4
- 6, 5 0 0
- 1, 0 2 3
4. ⚖️ Face Value vs Place Value
Now we know both! Let's compare them with the same digit in different numbers.
Face value of 5 = 5.
5 is in Hundreds place → place value = 500.
Digit 0 (ones place) → face value = 0, place value = 0. So they are equal.

- Which digit has the largest place value?
5. ๐งฉ More Solved Examples
(a) 3 is in Thousands → 3000
(b) 3 is in Hundreds → 300
(c) 3 is in Tens → 30
Place value 800 means 8 is in Hundreds place. Examples: 1,825 ; 4,876 ; 6,803.
Face value = 0, place value = 0 (in both Hundreds and Tens places, the 0's are placeholders).
- Find the place value of 6 in 4, 6 7 2.
- Write a number where digit 5 is in Tens place and digit 2 is in Thousands place.
6. ๐ Real‑Life Word Problems
365 → 3(H), 6(T), 5(O). 6 is in Tens place → place value = 60.
1,428 → 1(Th), 4(H), 2(T), 8(O). 4 is in Hundreds place → represents 400 students.
2,056 → 2(Th), 0(H), 5(T), 6(O). 5 is in Tens place → place value = 50. Yes, she is correct.
3,007 → 3(Th) → place value = 3000; 7(O) → place value = 7.
Number = 8,059. 5 is in Tens place → place value = 50.
