Place Value & Face Value – Class 2 & 3 Maths Concept | CBSE & UP Board | GPN

Class 2 Class 3 CBSE UP Board

๐Ÿ  Place Value & Face Value – What's the Difference?

Ever wondered why the digit 4 can be worth 4, 40, or 400? It's all about where it lives! Let's become place‑value detectives and crack the code of numbers up to thousands.

1. ๐Ÿ†” What is Face Value?

Face value is simply the digit itself – its own identity. No matter where it sits, the face value never changes. Just like you have the same name at home, at school, or in the park!

๐Ÿ“Œ Remember: Face value = the digit itself.
  • In 6, 3 2, the face value of 6 is 6, of 3 is 3, of 2 is 2.
  • In 4 0 5, the face value of 0 is 0.
Example 1
What is the face value of 7 in 7, 8 9 0?
▶ Show Answer

Face value of 7 = 7 (the digit itself).

Example 2
Find the face value of 4 in 3, 4 5 6.
▶ Show Answer

Face value of 4 = 4.

✍️ Try yourself: Find the face value of:
  • Digit 3 in 3,287
  • Digit 0 in 5,604
  • Digit 9 in 9,999

2. ๐Ÿ“ What is Place Value?

Place value is the value a digit gets from its position in a number. A digit in the Ones house is just itself, but in the Tens house it becomes 10 times bigger!

⚡ Rules of the house:
  • Ones place → digit × 1
  • Tens place → digit × 10
  • Hundreds place → digit × 100
  • Thousands place → digit × 1000

Let's see it with blocks: ๐Ÿงฑ = 100, ๐Ÿ“ = 10, ● = 1.

๐Ÿงฑ๐Ÿงฑ๐Ÿงฑ 3 Hundreds = 300
๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“ 4 Tens = 40
●● 2 Ones = 2

Total = 300 + 40 + 2 = 342.

Example 1
Find the place value of 5 in 5 6 2.
▶ Show Solution

In 562, the digit 5 is in the Hundreds place → place value = 5 × 100 = 500.

Example 2
What is the place value of 7 in 3, 7 8 0?
▶ Show Solution

3,780 → digits: 3(Th), 7(H), 8(T), 0(O).
7 is in Hundreds place → place value = 700.

✍️ Try yourself: Find the place value of:
  • Digit 4 in 4 3 2
  • Digit 2 in 1, 2 3 4
  • Digit 0 in 5 0 6

3. ๐Ÿ“Š Place Value Chart (H T O / Th H T O)

A place value chart helps us see exactly where each digit lives. Let's put the number 4, 8 3 6 into the chart.

Thousands
Hundreds
Tens
Ones
4
8
3
6

So, 4,836 = 4 thousands + 8 hundreds + 3 tens + 6 ones.

Example
Write 5, 2 0 7 in the place value chart. What is the place value of 2?
▶ Show Solution
Th
H
T
O
5
2
0
7

2 is in the Hundreds place → place value = 200.

✍️ Try yourself: Draw a chart for:
  • 3, 0 9 4
  • 6, 5 0 0
  • 1, 0 2 3

4. ⚖️ Face Value vs Place Value

Now we know both! Let's compare them with the same digit in different numbers.

๐Ÿ’ก Key difference: Face value never changes; place value changes with position.
Number Digit Face Value Place Value
3424440
47344400
504444
Example
In 2, 5 6 3, write the face value and place value of digit 5.
▶ Show Answer

Face value of 5 = 5.
5 is in Hundreds place → place value = 500.

Example
In 6, 0 4 9, which digit has the same face value and place value? Why?
▶ Show Solution

Digit 0 (ones place) → face value = 0, place value = 0. So they are equal.

✍️ Try yourself: For the number 4, 2 7 8, find:
  • Face value and place value of 7.
  • Face value and place value of 4.
  • Which digit has the largest place value?

5. ๐Ÿงฉ More Solved Examples

Example 1
Write the place value of 3 in each number: (a) 3,256 (b) 1,375 (c) 9,038.
▶ Show Solution

(a) 3 is in Thousands → 3000
(b) 3 is in Hundreds → 300
(c) 3 is in Tens → 30

Example 2
The place value of 8 in a number is 800. Write three possible numbers where 8 is in that place.
▶ Show Solution

Place value 800 means 8 is in Hundreds place. Examples: 1,825 ; 4,876 ; 6,803.

Example 3
What is the face value of 0 in 6, 0 0 5? And its place value?
▶ Show Answer

Face value = 0, place value = 0 (in both Hundreds and Tens places, the 0's are placeholders).

✍️ Try yourself:
  • Find the place value of 6 in 4, 6 7 2.
  • Write a number where digit 5 is in Tens place and digit 2 is in Thousands place.

6. ๐Ÿš— Real‑Life Word Problems

Problem 1
A book has 365 pages. What is the place value of digit 6?
