Collective and Abstract Nouns: Rules, List & Examples | GPN

Content updated on 20 April 2026

What do you call a group of birds flying together? What about the feeling you get when you ace a test? The answers are collective nouns and abstract nouns. This lesson for Class 5–6 students dives deep into these two important noun categories. You'll learn what they are, see extensive lists of examples, and discover how to use them correctly in sentences.

✅ Recommended for: Class 5-6 (Core) | CBSE & UP Board

Some nouns name groups of things (like "team" or "flock"). Others name ideas and feelings (like "happiness" or "courage"). These are collective and abstract nouns, and they behave a little differently from regular common nouns. Understanding them will make your writing richer and more precise.

Collective Noun: Name for a group or collection of people, animals, or things considered as one unit.
Abstract Noun: Name for an idea, feeling, quality, or state that cannot be perceived by the five senses.

What are Collective Nouns?

A collective noun refers to a group of people, animals, or things as a single entity. Even though the group contains many members, the collective noun itself is usually treated as singular for verb agreement.

  • People: team, family, class, army, crowd, committee, jury, audience, staff, crew
  • Animals: flock (of birds), herd (of cattle), pack (of wolves), swarm (of bees), pride (of lions), school (of fish)
  • Things: bunch (of keys/flowers), bouquet (of flowers), fleet (of ships), library (of books), pile (of clothes), set (of tools)

Verb Agreement with Collective Nouns

When the group acts as one unit, use a singular verb. When the members act individually, use a plural verb.

  • The team is playing well. (one unit)
  • The team are arguing among themselves. (individuals)
  • My family lives in Delhi. (one unit)
  • My family have different opinions. (individuals)

In exams, the singular verb is generally preferred unless the context clearly shows individual action.

What are Abstract Nouns?

An abstract noun names something intangible—something you cannot see, touch, hear, smell, or taste. It refers to ideas, feelings, qualities, and states. Abstract nouns are the opposite of concrete nouns (things you can physically sense).

  • Feelings/Emotions: love, hate, anger, fear, joy, sorrow, happiness, sadness, surprise, pride, shame
  • Qualities: honesty, bravery, kindness, cruelty, wisdom, foolishness, beauty, strength, patience
  • States: childhood, youth, slavery, poverty, freedom, sleep, death, life, peace, chaos
  • Ideas/Concepts: truth, justice, democracy, friendship, knowledge, time, thought, memory, imagination

Abstract vs Concrete Nouns

  • Concrete Nouns: Can be experienced by the senses. Examples: apple (see, touch, taste), bell (hear), flower (see, smell).
  • Abstract Nouns: Cannot be experienced by the senses. Examples: love, courage, time, thought.

Some nouns can be both: "Beauty" (abstract) vs "a beauty" (concrete, meaning a beautiful person).

How to Form Abstract Nouns

Many abstract nouns are formed by adding suffixes to adjectives, verbs, or other nouns.

  • From Adjectives: kind → kindness, brave → bravery, honest → honesty, wise → wisdom, true → truth
  • From Verbs: act → action, decide → decision, grow → growth, think → thought
  • From Nouns: child → childhood, friend → friendship, king → kingdom

Why Collective and Abstract Nouns Enrich Your Language

Using collective nouns makes your descriptions more precise and elegant—"a flock of birds" sounds better than "a group of birds." Abstract nouns allow you to talk about the most important human experiences—love, courage, freedom—that concrete nouns cannot express. For more noun practice, visit our Nouns and Pronouns Hub.
