Expanded & Standard Form of Numbers – Class 3 & 4 Maths | CBSE & UP Board | GPN

Class 3 Class 4 CBSE UP Board

๐Ÿงฉ Expanded Form & Standard Form – Two Sides of the Same Number!

Every number has a secret identity. Sometimes it looks like 4,672, and sometimes it stretches out like 4,000 + 600 + 70 + 2. Let's learn how to transform numbers back and forth – like magic, but it's maths!

1. ๐Ÿค” What is Standard Form? What is Expanded Form?

Standard form is the normal way we write numbers – quick and compact. Expanded form stretches the number out to show the value of each digit.

๐Ÿ“Œ Think of it like a puzzle:
  • Standard form = the finished puzzle (4,672)
  • Expanded form = all the pieces laid out (4,000 + 600 + 70 + 2)
4,672
4,000
600
70
2

Both show the same number – just different ways of looking at it!

Example
Which is standard form and which is expanded form? (a) 3,891 (b) 2,000 + 700 + 40 + 9
▶ Show Answer

(a) 3,891 → standard form
(b) 2,000+700+40+9 → expanded form

2. ๐Ÿ”„ Converting Standard Form to Expanded Form

Step 1: Write the number in a place value chart.
Step 2: Write each digit's value based on its place.
Step 3: Add them with + signs.

Example 1
Write 5, 2 3 9 in expanded form.

5,000 + 200 + 30 + 9

Example 2
Write 6, 0 4 8 in expanded form.
▶ Show Solution

6,000 + 0 + 40 + 8 = 6,000 + 40 + 8

Example 3 (4‑digit)
Write 9, 3 0 5 in expanded form.
▶ Show Solution

9,000 + 300 + 0 + 5 = 9,000 + 300 + 5

✍️ Try yourself: Write in expanded form:
  • 3, 7 2 8
  • 5, 0 9 1
  • 8, 4 0 0

3. ๐Ÿ” Converting Expanded Form to Standard Form

This is like putting the puzzle pieces back together! Just add all the values.

2,000
500
70
3
=
2,573
Example 1
Write in standard form: 4,000 + 300 + 20 + 6
▶ Show Solution

4,000 + 300 = 4,300
4,300 + 20 = 4,320
4,320 + 6 = 4,326

Example 2 (with zero)
Write in standard form: 7,000 + 0 + 90 + 2
▶ Show Solution

7,000 + 90 + 2 = 7,092

Example 3 (5‑digit)
Write in standard form: 20,000 + 3,000 + 400 + 50 + 7
▶ Show Solution

23,457

✍️ Try yourself: Write in standard form:
  • 3,000 + 600 + 40 + 8
  • 8,000 + 20 + 5
  • 50,000 + 4,000 + 300 + 10 + 9

4. ๐Ÿ“ Word Form (Number Names)

Numbers can also be written in words. This is called word form.

⚠️ Tricky ones to watch:
  • 1,234 → one thousand two hundred thirty-four (no "and" needed in CBSE style)
  • 3,005 → three thousand five
  • 40 → forty (not fourty!)
Example
Write 5, 8 3 2 in word form.
▶ Show Answer

five thousand eight hundred thirty-two

Example
Write 9, 0 4 6 in word form.
▶ Show Answer

nine thousand forty-six

Example
Write in standard form: six thousand two hundred eight
▶ Show Solution

six thousand = 6,000
two hundred = 200
eight = 8
Total = 6,208

✍️ Try yourself:
  • Write 4, 7 3 9 in word form.
  • Write 8, 0 1 5 in word form.
  • Write in standard form: three thousand five hundred sixty-one

5. ⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Forgetting zero placeholders:
  • Wrong: 3,000 + 5 = 35
  • Correct: 3,000 + 5 = 3,005 (the hundreds and tens are empty, so we put zeros)
❌ Mixing up expanded form and word form:
  • Expanded form uses numbers: 4,000 + 600 + 20 + 9
  • Word form uses words: four thousand six hundred twenty-nine
❌ Using "and" incorrectly:
  • In whole numbers, we don't use "and". "And" is for decimals.
  • Wrong: three hundred and forty-five
  • Correct: three hundred forty-five
Mistake Detector
A student wrote 50,000 + 2,000 + 40 + 8 as 52,408. Is this correct?
▶ Check

50,000 + 2,000 = 52,000
52,000 + 40 = 52,040
52,040 + 8 = 52,048
The student forgot the zero in the tens place!

6. ๐Ÿ“š Real-Life Word Problems

Problem 1
A library has 3,245 books. Write this number in expanded form and word form.
▶ Show Solution

Expanded: 3,000 + 200 + 40 + 5
Word: three thousand two hundred forty-five

Problem 2
An amusement park sold 10,056 tickets in one day. Write the number of tickets in expanded form.
▶ Show Solution

10,000 + 0 + 0 + 50 + 6 = 10,000 + 50 + 6

Problem 3
A farmer packed 4,058 apples. Write this number in expanded form and word form.
▶ Show Solution

Expanded: 4,000 + 0 + 50 + 8 = 4,000 + 50 + 8
Word: four thousand fifty-eight

Problem 4
The expanded form of a number is 5,000 + 200 + 70 + 3. What is the number? If you add 2 more hundreds, what is the new number?
▶ Show Solution

5,000 + 200 + 70 + 3 = 5,273
2 more hundreds = 200 more → 5,273 + 200 = 5,473
