Concept 4 — The “And” Rule for 3-Digit Numbers
When a 3-digit number has a non-zero value after the hundreds, we connect the parts with the word and. This single rule lets you name every number from 101 to 999.
▶ The Formula
[hundreds] + and + [last two digits as a number]
234 → two hundred and thirty-four
407 → four hundred and seven
580 → five hundred and eighty
Special: if last two digits are 00, no “and” → 500 = five hundred
How 234 is built:
234
=
200two hundred
+
and
+
34thirty-four
▶ two hundred and thirty-four
How 407 is built:
407
=
400four hundred
+
and
+
7seven
▶ four hundred and seven
How 500 is built:
500
=

▶ 1,000 to 9,000 — The Thousands
▼
1,000one thousand
2,000two thousand
3,000three thousand
4,000four thousand

▶ The Complete Formula
[thousands] + [hundreds] + and + [last two digits]
1,234 → one thousand two hundred and thirty-four
4,506 → four thousand five hundred and six
If hundreds = 0: skip it → 5,078 = five thousand and seventy-eight
