Did you know most of the world reads numbers differently? They use millions and billions instead of lakhs and crores. Let's explore how the International system works and how to convert between both systems.
๐ In this post:
1. ๐ What is the International Place Value System?
The International place value system is used by most countries around the world. Instead of lakhs and crores, they use millions and billions.
- 1 thousand = 1,000 (1 followed by 3 zeros)
- 1 million = 1,000,000 (1 followed by 6 zeros)
- 1 billion = 1,000,000,000 (1 followed by 9 zeros)
- 1 trillion = 1,000,000,000,000 (1 followed by 12 zeros)
The number 123,456,789,012 = 123 billion 456 million 789 thousand 12
2. ๐️ Periods: Ones, Thousands, Millions, Billions
In the International system, every period has 3 digits. Always 3 digits in each group.

3. ๐ข The 3:3:3 Comma Rule
In the International system, we put commas after every three digits from the right.
- Start from the right – group the first 3 digits (Ones period)
- Then next 3 digits (Thousands period)
- Then next 3 digits (Millions period)
- Then next 3 digits (Billions period), and so on.
123,456,789 = 123 million 456 thousand 789
Start from right: 42635178
Ones period: last 3 digits = 178
Thousands period: next 3 digits = 635
Millions period: remaining digits = 42
Answer: 42,635,178
8,291,506,347 (10 digits: billions period = 8, millions = 291, thousands = 506, ones = 347)
- 3749285
- 926134527
- 51397264810
4. ๐ Writing Numbers in Words (International Style)
In the International system, we read each period separately and add the period name.
Twenty-three million four hundred fifty-six thousand seven hundred eighty-nine
Five billion six hundred seventy-eight million four hundred thirty-two thousand one hundred ninety
Nine hundred two million forty thousand six
- 34,891,205
- 7,023,456,100
- 105,000,400
