Indian Place Value System – Lakhs & Crores – Class 4 & 5 Maths | CBSE & UP Board | GPN

Class 4 Class 5 CBSE UP Board

🇮🇳 Indian Place Value System – Lakhs, Crores & Beyond!

Have you ever seen a price like ₹5,00,000 or read "10 crore people" in the news? That's the Indian way of writing big numbers! Let's explore how lakhs and crores work, and why we put commas in funny places.

1. 🇮🇳 What is the Indian Place Value System?

The Indian place value system is how we read, write, and say large numbers in India. Instead of millions and billions, we use lakhs and crores.

📌 Quick facts:
  • 1 lakh = 100,000 (1 followed by 5 zeros)
  • 1 crore = 100 lakhs = 10,000,000 (1 followed by 7 zeros)
  • We group numbers differently – first 3 digits, then after every 2 digits.
Crores
9,87
Lakhs
65
Thousands
43
Ones
210

The number 9,87,65,43,210 = 9 crore 87 lakh 65 thousand 4 hundred ten? Wait – that grouping is not correct. We'll learn the proper grouping next.

2. 🏘️ The Four Periods: Ones, Thousands, Lakhs, Crores

In the Indian system, digits are grouped into periods from right to left:

Crores
Lakhs
Thousands
Ones
10 Crores
10,00,00,000
10 Lakhs
10,00,000
10 Thousands
10,000
Hundreds
100
Crores
1,00,00,000
Lakhs
1,00,000
Thousands
1,000
Tens
10
Ones period has 3 places: Ones, Tens, Hundreds. All other periods have 2 places each.

10 Lakhs10,00,000
Lakhs1,00,000
10 Thousands10,000
Thousands1,000
Hundreds100
Tens10
Ones1
⚠️ Important: The Ones period has 3 digits (Hundreds, Tens, Ones). All other periods have 2 digits each.

3. 🔢 The 3:2:2 Comma Rule

In the Indian system, we put commas in a special pattern: 3 digits from the right, then every 2 digits.

📐 The 3:2:2 pattern:
  • Start from the right – group the first 3 digits (Ones period)
  • Then group next 2 digits (Thousands period)
  • Then next 2 digits (Lakhs period)
  • Then next 2 digits (Crores period), and so on.

Crores period: remaining digits = 4
Answer: 4,38,71,965
