🏠 Before, After & Between – Meet the Number Neighbors!
Every number has neighbors: the one just before (1 less) and the one just after (1 more). Sometimes we also look for the number that sits between two other numbers. This concept builds number sense and helps with counting, addition, subtraction, and even telling time! Let's explore with lots of examples and fun activities.
📖 What's inside:
✨ Why understanding before, after & between matters
- 🧮 Counting fluently forward and backward
- 📏 Understanding number order and distance
- ➕➖ Addition (1 more) and subtraction (1 less)
- ⏰ Telling time (minutes before/after the hour)
- 📅 Reading calendars (days before/after a date)
- 🧩 Patterns and sequencing in higher math
1. Before – The number just left
The number that comes just before a given number is 1 less. Think of moving one step backward on a number line, or going down one step on stairs.
- 1 Start at 8.
- 2 Move one step left: 8 → 7.
12 − 1 = 11.
20 − 1 = 19.
1 − 1 = 0. Yes, zero counts!
100 − 1 = 99.

2. After – The number just right
The number that comes just after a given number is 1 more. Think of moving one step forward on a number line, or going up one step on stairs.
- 1 Start at 8.
- 2 Move one step right: 8 → 9.
15 + 1 = 16.
29 + 1 = 30.
99 + 1 = 100.
199 + 1 = 200.

3. Between – The middle neighbor
When we have two numbers, the number exactly in the middle (exactly one more than the first and one less than the second) is the between number.
- 1 Count from 5: 5, 6, 7.
- 2 The middle number is 6.
8, 9, 10 → 9.
14, 15, 16 → 15.
49, 50, 51 → 50.
199, 200, 201 → 200.
✏️ Practice – Between
4. Hands‑on activities
Line up 5 toy animals. Ask: Who is before the third? Who is after the second? Who is between the first and third?
b) Who is after the second animal?
c) Who is between the first and third animal?
a) Before third (🦊) is 🐵 (2).
b) After second (🐵) is 🦊 (3).
c) Between first (🐻) and third (🦊) is 🐵 (2).
Look at a clock. Numbers go in a circle. Try these:
- What number comes before 3 on the clock?
- What number comes after 9?
- What number is between 10 and 12?
Before 3 → 2
After 9 → 10
Between 10 and 12 → 11
On a calendar, days come in order. If today is the 15th, what day was it yesterday? What day is tomorrow?
Yesterday = 14 (before), Tomorrow = 16 (after).

6. Challenge corner
After me is 56 → I am 55. But 55 is odd, not even. So no number fits. This is a trick question!
Before 1000 = 999, after 999 = 1000, between 749 and 751 = 750.
