Ascending & Descending Order – Class 2 to 4 Maths | CBSE & UP Board | GPN

Class 2 Class 3 Class 4 CBSE UP Board

📈 Ascending & Descending Order – Putting Numbers in Line!

Ever lined up from shortest to tallest? That’s ascending order. From tallest to shortest? That’s descending order. Numbers love to line up too! Let's learn how to arrange numbers from smallest to largest and largest to smallest.

1. 📈 What is Ascending Order?

Ascending order means arranging numbers from the smallest to the largest. Think of climbing up a staircase – you start at the bottom (smallest) and go up (larger).

3
7
12

3 → 7 → 12    (3 < 7 < 12)

Example 1
Arrange in ascending order: 8, 3, 10, 1
▶ Show Solution

Smallest to largest: 1, 3, 8, 10 → 1, 3, 8, 10

Example 2
Write in ascending order: 45, 32, 56, 23
▶ Show Solution

23, 32, 45, 56

✍️ Try yourself: Arrange in ascending order:
  • 7, 2, 9, 4
  • 67, 54, 89, 43

2. 📉 What is Descending Order?

Descending order means arranging numbers from the largest to the smallest. Think of sliding down a slide – you start at the top (largest) and go down (smaller).

20
15
8

20 → 15 → 8    (20 > 15 > 8)

Example 1
Arrange in descending order: 5, 12, 7, 9
▶ Show Solution

Largest to smallest: 12, 9, 7, 5 → 12, 9, 7, 5

Example 2
Write in descending order: 34, 56, 21, 43
▶ Show Solution

56, 43, 34, 21

✍️ Try yourself: Arrange in descending order:
  • 8, 3, 10, 6
  • 98, 76, 89, 67

3. 🌟 Real-Life Examples

We use ascending and descending order all the time without even realizing it!

🧍‍♂️🧍‍♀️
Height order: Students lining up from shortest to tallest = ascending order.
🏆
Sports rankings: 1st place (highest score) to last place = descending order.
📅
Dates: From oldest to newest = ascending; newest to oldest = descending.
Example
If you arrange your marks in exams from highest to lowest, is that ascending or descending?
▶ Show Answer

Highest to lowest = descending order.

4. 🔢 Ordering Larger Numbers (Place Value)

When numbers have more digits, compare them step by step from the left:

  • Step 1: Count the digits. More digits = larger number.
  • Step 2: If same number of digits, compare the leftmost digit.
  • Step 3: If those are equal, move to the next digit, and so on.
1234
<
1243
<
1324
<
1342

1234 < 1243 < 1324 < 1342 (ascending order)

Example
Arrange in ascending order: 3289, 3298, 3982, 3928
▶ Show Solution

All numbers have 4 digits. Compare step by step:

  • Thousands: all are 3 → same.
  • Hundreds: two numbers have 2 (3289, 3298) and two have 9 (3982, 3928). Numbers with smaller hundreds come first.
  • Order the 2‑hundred group: 3289 and 3298. Compare their tens: 8 vs 9 → 3289 < 3298.
  • Order the 9‑hundred group: 3928 and 3982. Compare tens: 2 vs 8 → 3928 < 3982.

Ascending order: 3289, 3298, 3928, 3982

✍️ Try yourself: Arrange in ascending order:
  • 4567, 4576, 4657, 4675
  • 8234, 8243, 8324, 8342

5. ✅ More Solved Examples

Example 1
Arrange in descending order: 2345, 2354, 2435, 2453
▶ Show Solution

All numbers have 4 digits. Compare from left:

  • Thousands: all 2 → same.
  • Hundreds: two numbers have 4 (2435, 2453) and two have 3 (2345, 2354). Larger hundreds come first in descending order.
  • Order the 4‑hundred group: 2435 and 2453. Compare tens: 3 vs 5 → 2453 > 2435.
  • Order the 3‑hundred group: 2345 and 2354. Compare tens: 4 vs 5 → 2354 > 2345.

Descending order: 2453, 2435, 2354, 2345

Example 2
Arrange in ascending order: 5678, 5687, 5768, 5786
▶ Show Solution

Ascending order: 5678 < 5687 < 5768 < 5786 → 5678, 5687, 5768, 5786

Example 3
Arrange in descending order: 9876, 9867, 9786, 9768
▶ Show Solution

Descending order: 9876 > 9867 > 9786 > 9768 → 9876, 9867, 9786, 9768

✍️ Try yourself:
  • Arrange in ascending order: 3456, 3465, 3546, 3564
  • Arrange in descending order: 7891, 7819, 7981, 7918
