« Back to Home « Free Resources « Maths Hub « Primary Maths

Class 1 Class 2 Class 3 CBSE UP Board

Learn the fundamentals of Addition, one of the most important operations in mathematics. Students begin by understanding what addition means through simple examples and objects, then learn how to add numbers using pictures, number lines, and column methods. As numbers grow larger, they also practice addition without carry and addition with carry (regrouping). Each topic below provides clear explanations, solved examples, and a free printable worksheet.

What is Addition?

Addition is a basic arithmetic operation used to combine two or more numbers to find their total. It is usually represented by the plus (+) sign. For example, when we add 3 and 4, the total becomes 7. In primary classes, students first learn addition through everyday examples such as counting objects, toys, fruits, or pictures.

Why this topic matters: Addition builds the foundation for many other mathematical operations. Once students understand addition clearly, it becomes easier for them to learn subtraction, multiplication, and division in higher classes.

Addition using Objects, Pictures & Number Line

Young learners often start by adding real objects like apples, pencils, or blocks. Teachers also use pictures and number lines to help students visually understand how numbers combine. This method makes the concept of addition easier and more engaging for early primary students.

Addition without Carry

When the sum of digits in a column is less than 10, the addition can be done without carrying. This method helps students practice basic column addition with two-digit or three-digit numbers and builds confidence in solving simple calculations.

Addition with Carry (Regrouping)

When the sum of digits in a column becomes 10 or more, students need to carry a digit to the next place value column. This process is called regrouping. Learning addition with carry helps students correctly add larger numbers and prepares them for advanced arithmetic.

GPN Tip for Parents: Practice addition using everyday items like fruits, toys, or coins. Asking children to combine objects and count the total helps them understand addition naturally.
