Class 1 Class 2 Class 3 CBSE UP Board

Learn the basics of Subtraction, the mathematical operation used to find the difference between numbers. Students first understand subtraction through simple real-life examples, objects, pictures, and number lines. As they progress, they learn how to subtract larger numbers using column methods, including subtraction without borrowing and subtraction with borrowing (regrouping). Each topic below includes clear explanations, solved examples, and a free printable worksheet.

What is Subtraction?

Subtraction is a basic arithmetic operation used to find the difference between two numbers. It shows how much one number is less than another. The subtraction sign (−) is used to represent this operation. For example, when we subtract 3 from 7, the result is 4.

Why this topic matters: Subtraction helps students understand how numbers decrease and how quantities change. It is an essential foundation for learning multiplication, division, and many real-life calculations.

Subtraction using Objects, Pictures & Number Line

Young learners often begin subtraction by removing objects from a group and counting how many remain. Pictures and number lines also help students visualize subtraction. Moving backward on a number line clearly shows how subtraction works.

Subtraction without Borrowing

When each digit in the top number is larger than the digit below it, subtraction can be performed easily without borrowing. This method helps students build confidence with column subtraction using two-digit and three-digit numbers.

Subtraction with Borrowing (Regrouping)

Sometimes the digit in the top number is smaller than the digit below it. In such cases, students borrow from the next place value column. This process is called regrouping or borrowing and allows students to correctly subtract larger numbers.

GPN Tip for Parents: Ask children to remove items from a group of objects and count what remains. This simple activity helps them understand subtraction naturally through real-life situations.
