Section A: Simple Tenses (10 Questions)
1. Convert to passive: "The cat chased the mouse."
Answer: The mouse was chased by the cat. - Simple past active becomes simple past passive.
2. Convert to passive: "She writes a letter."
Answer: A letter is written by her. - Simple present active becomes simple present passive.
3. Convert to active: "The cake was baked by my mother."
Answer: My mother baked the cake. - Remove "by" phrase and make subject.
4. Convert to passive: "They will build a new hospital."
Answer: A new hospital will be built by them. - Simple future active becomes "will be + past participle".
5. Convert to passive: "He teaches English."
Answer: English is taught by him. - Third person singular present becomes "is + past participle".
6. Convert to active: "The room is cleaned every day."
Answer: Someone cleans the room every day. - Add generic subject when agent is unknown.
7. Convert to passive: "My brother broke the window."
Answer: The window was broken by my brother. - Simple past with irregular verb.
8. Convert to active: "The match will be won by our team."
Answer: Our team will win the match. - Future passive becomes future active.
9. Convert to passive: "People speak English all over the world."
Answer: English is spoken all over the world. - General truth often uses passive without "by" phrase.
10. Convert to active: "The book was returned to the library."
Answer: Someone returned the book to the library. - Use "someone" when agent isn't specified.
Section B: Continuous & Perfect Tenses (10 Questions)
11. Convert to passive: "She is writing a novel."
Answer: A novel is being written by her. - Present continuous becomes "is/are being + past participle".
12. Convert to passive: "They were painting the house."
Answer: The house was being painted by them. - Past continuous becomes "was/were being + past participle".
13. Convert to passive: "He has completed the project."
Answer: The project has been completed by him. - Present perfect becomes "has/have been + past participle".
14. Convert to passive: "They had finished the work before I arrived."
Answer: The work had been finished before I arrived. - Past perfect becomes "had been + past participle".
15. Convert to active: "The bridge is being repaired by the workers."
Answer: The workers are repairing the bridge. - Present continuous passive becomes active.
16. Convert to active: "The letter has been posted by her."
Answer: She has posted the letter. - Present perfect passive becomes active.
17. Convert to passive: "We will have completed the task by tomorrow."
Answer: The task will have been completed by tomorrow. - Future perfect becomes "will have been + past participle".
18. Convert to active: "The food was being cooked when I entered."
Answer: Someone was cooking the food when I entered. - Past continuous passive with generic subject.
19. Convert to passive: "She had finished her homework before dinner."
Answer: Her homework had been finished before dinner. - Past perfect with possessive pronoun.
20. Convert to active: "The car is being washed by the driver."
Answer: The driver is washing the car. - Present continuous passive with specified agent.
Section C: Special Cases (10 Questions)
21. Convert to passive: "Someone stole my bicycle yesterday."
Answer: My bicycle was stolen yesterday. - With "someone", passive often omits "by" phrase.
22. Convert to passive: "They gave her a prize." (two objects)
Answer: She was given a prize. OR A prize was given to her. - Two possible passives with ditransitive verbs.
23. Convert to passive: "People believe that he is honest."
Answer: He is believed to be honest. OR It is believed that he is honest. - Two structures for verbs of thinking.
24. Convert to passive: "You must obey the rules."
Answer: The rules must be obeyed. - Modal verbs use "modal + be + past participle".
25. Convert to passive: "They are going to build a new school."
Answer: A new school is going to be built. - "Going to" future uses "going to be + past participle".
26. Convert to active: "Let the window be opened."
Answer: Open the window. - Imperative passive becomes imperative active.
27. Convert to passive: "Who broke this vase?"
Answer: By whom was this vase broken? OR Who was this vase broken by? - Questions use "By whom" or end with "by".
28. Convert to passive: "We should respect our elders."
Answer: Our elders should be respected. - Modal "should" becomes "should be + past participle".
29. Convert to active: "The thief is being chased by the police."
Answer: The police are chasing the thief. - Present continuous passive with specified agent.
30. Convert to passive: "Nobody can solve this problem."
Answer: This problem cannot be solved by anybody. - "Nobody" becomes "by anybody" with negative.
