Look around you. What do you see? A red apple. A big elephant. A round ball. The words red, big, and round are adjectives—they describe the nouns. Without adjectives, our language would be like a drawing without colors. Let's learn how to use these describing words to make our sentences more fun and full of life.
Examples: blue sky, tiny ant, square box
What are Adjectives?
Adjectives are words that give us extra information about nouns. They answer questions like "What kind?" "Which one?" and "How many?" For now, we will focus on adjectives that describe what something looks like.
- The green grass. (What kind of grass?)
- A huge mountain. (What size?)
- A triangular sign. (What shape?)
Adjectives usually come before the noun they describe. They can also come after verbs like 'is', 'am', 'are'. Example: The sky is blue.
Adjectives of Color (With Hindi Meanings)
These adjectives tell us what color something is. They are usually the easiest to spot!
| English | Hindi | Example |
|---|---|---|
| red | เคฒाเคฒ | a red rose |
| blue | เคจीเคฒा | a blue sky |
| yellow | เคชीเคฒा | a yellow sunflower |
| green | เคนเคฐा | green grass |
| white | เคธเคซेเคฆ | white clouds |
| black | เคाเคฒा | a black cat |
| purple | เคฌैंเคเคจी | purple grapes |
| pink | เคुเคฒाเคฌी | a pink dress |
| orange | เคจाเคฐंเคी | an orange pumpkin |
| brown | เคญूเคฐा | a brown bear |
More color words: golden, silver, grey, violet, indigo, crimson, turquoise, beige, maroon, navy blue.
Adjectives of Size (Opposites Practice)
These words tell us how big or small something is. Many size adjectives come in opposite pairs.
| Adjective | Opposite | Example |
|---|---|---|
| big | small | a big house / a small cottage |
| tall | short | a tall tree / a short bush |
| huge | tiny | a huge elephant / a tiny ant |
| long | short | a long pencil / a short eraser |
| fat | thin | a fat cat / a thin stick |
| wide | narrow | a wide road / a narrow lane |
| thick | thin | a thick book / a thin notebook |
| heavy | light | a heavy bag / a light feather |
| deep | shallow | a deep well / a shallow pond |
| high | low | a high mountain / a low valley |
Adjectives of Shape (Real-Life Examples)
These describe the form or outline of an object.
| Shape | Adjective | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ⚪ circle | round / circular | a round table / a circular plate |
| ⬛ square | square | a square box / a square tile |
| ๐ rectangle | rectangular | a rectangular door / a rectangular field |

| ❤️ heart | heart-shaped | a heart-shaped balloon / a heart-shaped pendant |
| ๐ straight | straight | a straight line / a straight road |
| ๐ crescent | crescent-shaped | a crescent-shaped moon / a crescent roll |
Using Adjectives in Sentences: Two Positions
Adjectives can be placed before the noun or after the verb.
| Before the Noun (Attributive) | After the Verb (Predicative) |
|---|---|
| I have a blue pen. | My pen is blue. |
| She ate a big apple. | The apple is big. |
| He drew a round circle. | The circle is round. |
| We saw a beautiful rainbow. | The rainbow was beautiful. |
| They live in a small house. | Their house is small. |
Special Cases: Same Adjective, Different Noun
Some adjectives stay the same no matter what noun they describe. Others change form slightly. In English, most basic adjectives (color, size, shape) do not change. Compare with Hindi where adjectives often change with gender and number.
- The red car. / The red cars. (no change)
- A big dog. / A big house. (no change)
But remember: adjectives never become plural. We say "three red apples" not "three reds apples."
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Wrong ❌ | Right ✅ | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| I have red a ball. | I have a red ball. | Article comes before adjective. |
| She is girl tall. | She is a tall girl. | Adjective before noun. |
| The round is table. | The table is round. | Correct word order. |
| He has blues eyes. | He has blue eyes. | Adjectives don't take plural 's'. |
| It is an big apple. | It is a big apple. | 'An' only before vowel sounds. |
