When Lomov leaves the house angrily, Chubukov tells Natalya that Lomov had actually come to propose to her. Shocked, she regrets her behavior and insists that her father bring him back immediately. When Lomov returns, they again start arguing—this time about whose dog is better. Amidst all the shouting and chaos, Lomov faints due to stress. To calm the situation, Chubukov quickly puts Lomov’s and Natalya’s hands together and declares them engaged. Ironically, even after the engagement, they continue to fight.
The play humorously exposes the foolishness and hypocrisy of people who treat marriage not as a bond of love, but as a business deal or social convenience.
