“Bholi” is an inspiring story about Sulekha, a young girl who is nicknamed “Bholi” because she appears simple, shy, and slow. Her life is filled with neglect from the very beginning. She falls from her cot as a baby and suffers brain damage, which affects her mental development. Later, she gets smallpox, leaving her face permanently scarred. Because of these issues, she stammers and is ignored by everyone. Her parents never expect anything from her and treat her very differently from their other children.
When a new primary school opens in the village, the Tehsildar convinces Bholi’s father, Ramlal, to send at least one daughter to school as an example. Reluctantly, Bholi is chosen because her parents feel she has no prospect of marriage anyway. At first, Bholi is terrified. She has never been treated kindly before.
Her life takes a positive turn when she meets her new teacher. The teacher speaks to her with love, patience, and encouragement—something Bholi had never experienced. She patiently helps Bholi overcome her fear. With time, Bholi begins to trust her teacher and gains confidence. Her teacher promises her that she will grow up to become someone respected and independent.
Years pass, and Bholi grows into an educated and confident young woman. When a wealthy but greedy middle-aged man named Bishamber Nath agrees to marry her, Bholi’s parents feel relieved, even though he is much older. However, on the wedding day, Bishamber sees her pockmarks and demands a dowry of 5,000 rupees. Her helpless father agrees out of shame and fear.
Bholi takes a bold stand. She refuses to marry Bishamber, saying that she will not marry a man who insults her father and demands dowry. She firmly declares she will stay unmarried and serve her parents and society. She also says confidently that she can support herself because she is educated.
The entire village is shocked at her courage. Even her parents are unsure, but Bholi reassures them that she will take care of them for life. The story beautifully shows how education can empower a girl, giving her dignity, strength, and independence.
